Q: Why did you go into this career?

A: I developed immense interest in biology, physics and biochemistry during my early school years and decided to eventually pursue a career in medicine.

Not only did this dynamic field satisfy my scientific curiosity, but gave me a great opportunity to serve cardiovascular disease patients.

There is no greater pleasure than helping a patient with a heart attack or a failing heart valve with the latest interventional cardiology tools and techniques, and to get them back on their feet as quickly as possible.

Q: What services do you provide?

A: I provide minimally invasive catheter-based treatment for advanced structural and valvular heart disease, with procedures such as Transcatheter Aortic Value Replacement (TAVR), MitraClip, WATCHMAN and treatment of heart attacks with coronary stenting.

Q: What makes this area of medicine fulfilling for you?

A: Previously, advanced heart valve disease could only be fixed with open-heart surgery. Now, with the exciting new field of structural heart disease, we are able to fix the ailing heart valves without open heart surgery by using small catheters from the groin artery. Patients can usually go home in one to two days. It is great to help these patients who are not candidates for open-heart surgery with the cutting-edge interventional procedures. There is great excitement in the medical community about structural heart disease advancements.

Q: When did you realize this was the right medical career path for you?

A: During my internal medicine residency training, I realized I enjoyed taking care of cardiovascular disease patients.

Q: Whats the latest advancement in your field that will benefit patients?

A: I am pleased with the advancements in structural and valvular heart disease, including transcatheter aortic valve disease, MitraClip and left atrial appendage occlusion (WATCHMAN), especially in atrial fibrillation. These are cutting-edge treatments that would prove to be game-changers in management of cardiovascular patients with advanced disease thats not amenable to open-heart surgery. For example, with the WATCHMAN procedure, patients with atrial fibrillation can get rid of the need for long-term anticoagulation with blood thinners to prevent stroke.

Q: What is your best advice for current and potential patients?

A: Please do not hesitate to reach out to us here at Health Firsts Holmes Regional Medical Center. We recently have developed a comprehensive structural heart disease team, which includes trained structural heart interventionalists, cardiothoracic surgeons, imaging specialists and cardiac anesthesiologists. We are dedicated to serving our patients in Brevard County. If you would like to be evaluated, please contact the Valve Clinic at 321.434.VALV (8258).
