Ohio States Heart and Vascular Center is home to a high-volume team of interventional cardiologists, performing more than 5,000 procedures each year. This experience means our physicians, nurses and staff are better equipped and more skilled at handling even the most difficult cases. Not only are we home to state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization facilities at the Ross Heart Hospital and Ohio States University Hospital East, but we also pioneer new and minimally invasive techniques, such as transradial catheterization.

For emergency or life-threatening cardiovascular conditions, our physicians developed the states first Level 1 Cardiovascular Emergency Program, which gives patients immediate access to the highest levels of care for a variety of cardiovascular emergencies. We participate in a statewide system of heart attack care that speeds the treatment time for patients suffering from heart attacks, meaning patients treated at Ohio State receive care nearly twice as fast as the national average of 90 minutes.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have recognized Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center as a leader in heart attack patient survival rates. Ohio State is one of only 95 in the United States and one of only three in Ohio to achieve this level of performance. Our heart specialists follow national guidelines when treating heart attack patients to provide them with the safest and best possible outcomes.

Learn more about how Ohio State is leading the way in heart & vascular treatment, and helping more patients survive.

Ohio States Ross Heart Hospital is designed with an entire floor dedicated to cardiac catheterization procedures. The staff members of this specialized unit, from our physicians to our nurses and support staff, are experts in the care and management of cardiac catheterizations and emergency cardiovascular care. Patients recover in state-of-the-art rooms that are designed to allow our patients to receive all care and necessary equipment in the same room, rather than being moved throughout the hospital for different levels of care.

Ohio States University Hospital East also has a newly renovated state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization laboratory providing the same level of care from Ohio States interventional cardiology team.

In the event of an emergency procedure, weve designed a system to mobilize a treatment team and speed patients directly from the Emergency Department to a cardiac catheterization lab for life-saving treatment.

For patients at the Ross Heart Hospital who receive transradial catheterization, our patients recover in a state-of-the-art Radial Lounge, where they are free to relax upright in comfortable recliners, talk with their family, read or watch TV while they recover.

At Ohio State, our team of interventional cardiologists uses catheterizations and stenting procedures to treat blockages in the heart and vascular system. Common conditions that we treat include:

We have extensive experience with minimally invasivecoronary angioplastyand stenting procedures forperipheral artery disease;stent grafting and endovascular repair foraortic aneurysms;and carotid stenting.

The field of interventional cardiology has expanded to provide better outcomes, less pain and shorter hospital stays and recovery time for patients. At Ohio State, we are continuously advancing our interventional cardiology program to provide patients with innovative technologies and treatments, such as transradial catheterization and therapeutic hypothermia.

We use a radial-first approach during cardiac catheterization procedures. Traditionally, a catheter was placed in the femoral artery near the groin. In the radial-first approach, the catheter is placed in the radial artery in the wrist. This process has resulted in better cardiac outcomes and faster recoveries for patients.

Ohio States interventional cardiologists have performed more than 3,000 transradial catheterizations and, after adopting this method, complications have decreased by 60 percent. Our patients recover in a state-of-the-art Radial Lounge, where they are free to relax upright in comfortable recliners, talk with their family, read or watch TV while they recover.
