Artists to work on mural downtown in support of mental health – pacificsandiego.com

Renowned artists Ted Meyer and Armando Nunez will join forces for an outdoor art installation in the Gaslamp Quarter to help break down the stigma surrounding mental illness.

The artwork will be created live on site over two days and will be on display through Oct. 5 during the annual Psych Congress convention at the San Diego Convention Center and before Mental Illness Awareness Week, which starts Oct. 6.

The mural launched in partnership with the National Alliance on Mental Illness San Diego and with San Diego-based biopharmaceutical company Neurocrine Biosciences will be done by Meyer and Nunez alongside students from Grossmont College.

Nunez is known locally for his work around town, especially in Barrio Logan and Chicano Park.

Meyers been exhibited all over the country, and his Scarred for Life art project was previously shown at Mesa College and Oceanside Museum of Art.

The purpose of the mural is to start a conversation around mental illness and conditions that are less understood ... and bring the community together to break down the stigma surrounding mental health, organizers say.

The mural project will be interactive, with passers-by encouraged to pin green ribbons on the mural to show support for the mental health community.

Neurocrine will make a donation to the local branch of National Alliance on Mental Illness on behalf of participants.
