Nov. 21, 2023 | LITTLE ROCK Muhammad Ali Zulqarnain, M.D., an interventional cardiologist and structural heart specialist, has joined the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) as an assistant professor in the Division of Cardiology.

He is board-certified in cardiovascular disease, nuclear cardiology, hypertension, adult echocardiography, critical care echocardiography, critical care medicine and internal medicine.

We were delighted to recruit Dr. Muhammad Ali Zulqarnain to the cardiology group at UAMS, said J. Paul Mounsey, M.D., professor and chair of the cardiology division in the UAMS College of Medicine Department of Internal Medicine. He brings a wealth of experience in interventional cardiology, including transcatheter heart valve surgeries as well as treatment of coronary artery disease. Given his experience in intensive care, we will also look to him to make an impact in our cardiac intensive care.

Zulqarnain is also the associate director for the UAMS interventional cardiology fellowship program.

He earned his medical degree in from Shifa College of Medicine, Bahria University, in Islamabad, Pakistan, then completed an internal medicine residency at Northeastern Ohio University College of Medicine in Canton, Ohio, where he received awards for excellence in research and critical care.

He subsequently completed four fellowships: one in critical care at the University of Kentucky in Lexington; one in cardiovascular disease at Summa Health, Northeast Ohio University College of Medicine in Akron; one in interventional cardiology at Borgess Heart Institute at Michigan State University in Kalamazoo; and one in structural heart disease at Main Line Health Lankenau Medical Center in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania.

He specializes in innovative percutaneous treatments for structural heart conditions including Watchman, MitraClip, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), valve-in-valve transcatheter mitral valve replacement, patent foramen ovale (PFO) and atrial septal defect (ASD) closures. He also specializes in high-risk procedures using alternate access like transcaval and transaxillary approach for TAVR procedures. In addition to this, he has a special interest in high-risk coronary interventions and mechanical circulatory support with additional training in critical care.
