The most famous textbook in interventional cardiology, Grossman and Baims Cardiac Catheterization, Angiography and Intervention, now bears the name of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio on its inside cover.

Marc D. Feldman, MD, emeritus and adjoint professor of medicine in the Janey and Dolph Briscoe Division of Cardiology, worked with Mauro Moscucci, MD, of the University of Michigan, to co-edit the first paperback version of the classic book.

Interventional cardiology involves, among many therapies, placement of stents to open clogged arteries and implantation of interventional valves to replace diseased aortic, tricuspid and mitral valves. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is one of the many procedures performed in this specialized field of cardiology.

The textbook has been around since the 1970s and is the most respected book in interventional cardiology, Feldman said. Ive been in the book for years because I always write a chapter. The original author, William Grossman, MD, asked Mauro and I to change it to a paperback. Feldman and Moscucci did fellowships under Grossman.

That meant condensing 1,216 pages of material from an inches-thick hardcover book into a paperback that fits in a white coat pocket.

Learners today want to be able to carry the book into a catheterization lab, Feldman said. This version will be on the counter of the lab. It fits with the times.

The book is for interventional cardiologists in training or cardiology fellows who desire to enter interventional cardiology. The health science center trains two interventional cardiology fellows per year.
