The Hyperbaric Medicine Program at Jackson Memorial Hospital offers consultation and outpatient hyperbaric oxygen therapy for adults with problem wounds. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is effective in the management of selected problem wounds and traumatic injuries.

Our hyperbaric center was established in January 1989 and is located adjacent to our level one Ryder Trauma Center. We have developed extensive experience and expertise in the management of traumatic wounds/crush injuries, refractory osteomyelitis, diabetic foot wounds/amputations and radiation tissue damage.

We provide hyperbaric oxygen therapy at a pressure of 2.4ATA (45 feet sea water) with a total of 90 minutes of 100 percent oxygen at this depth. Our Hyperbaric Medicine service has provided more than 45,000 patient treatments in a safe environment with minimal morbidity and no mortality since the program began.

The Hyperbaric Medicine Program provides a consultative service for hyperbaric oxygen therapy indications as approved by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS). Wound management is also provided as required for patients undergoing HBO2 treatment to optimize wound healing potential. Conditions treated include:

In our clinic, transcutaneous oximetry studies are performed to:

Jackson Memorial Hospital has the only triple-lock multi-place hyperbaric chamber in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Our chamber is large enough that a patient can sit up or lay down for comfort, and it allows a trained staff member to accompany the patient inside to monitor and provide patient management as required, e.g., auto inflation of middle ears, pain management, hypoglycemic events, oxygen toxicity, claustrophobia and IV antibiotics.

The 32-foot-long by 6-foot-wide chamber also permits treatment of most patients with claustrophobia who might not be comfortable in a single-place chamber.

Another important feature of the chamber is its ability to quickly pressurize a small lock where outside medications can be transferred inside to the patient if necessary. Because of the triple-lock feature, a healthcare professional can join the patient inside the chamber while keeping them at their therapeutic pressure.

The staff members of Jacksons Hyperbaric Medicine Program are highly trained and experienced in HBO2 therapy.
